Pocoyo Crochet Hat

My son loves Pocoyo. So I thought I can make him a costume for this year’s Halloween, which is still over four months away.

WARNING: I’m new to writing patterns. If you have any questions or found any errors, please leave comments. Thank you so much!

This hat is really simple. I use Bernat Blanket Bright Busy Blue. This color fits Pocoyo’s outfit perfectly. Crochet hook 8mm and scissors.

Abbreviations:

  • SC: single crochet
  • st: stitch
  • sc2tog: single crochet 2 together

Hat:

Round 1: Start with Magic Loop. Chain 2 (count as first single crochet). Then 5 SC in magic loop. Join first st. (6 SC)

Round 2: 2 SC in each st, join first st (12 SC).

Round 3: Chain 2, SC in same st, SC in next st, *2 SC in first st, 1 SC in next st*, repeat ** to the end, join first st (18 SC)

Round 4: Chain 2, SC in same st, SC in next 2 st, *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next 2 st*, repeat ** to the end, join first st (24 SC)

Round 5: Chain 2, SC in same st, SC in next 3 st, *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next 3 st*, repeat ** to the end, join first st (30 SC)

Round 6: Chain 2, SC in same st, SC in next 4 st, *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next 4 st*, repeat ** to the end, join first st (36 SC)

Round 7: Chain 2, SC in same st, SC in next 5 st, *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next 5 st*, repeat ** to the end, join first st (42 SC)

Round 8-11: Chain 2, SC around to the end, join first st (42 SC). Break off yarn.

Ear flaps (make 3):

Pocoyo’s hat has three ear flaps: left, right, and back. Since there’re 42 stitches at the last round of the hat, each ear flap will start with 10 SC, total of 30 SC for all 3 flaps.

Since I could still see the seam of the hat, I decided that will be the center back of the hat. From the seam, count 15 st either to the left or the right then start with SC:

Round 1: 10 SC, turn

Round 2: Chain 2, sc2tog next 2 stitches, sc next 4 st, sc2tog next 2 st, sc the last st. (8 SC), turn.

Round 3: SC across (8 SC), turn

Round 4: Chain 2, sc2tog next 2 stitches, sc next 2 st, sc2tog next 2 st, sc the last st. (6 SC), turn.

Round 5: SC across (6 SC). Break off yarn.

Repeat the above steps for ear flaps twice. Weave in all the ends.

Picture below shows left, back, and right side flaps.

I’m in the process of making a Pocoyo top. So stay tuned!
